As an independent artist, itâs natural to wonder â
âCan I take my song and upload it again somewhere else?ââWhat if I want to switch distributors?ââWill I get in trouble for doing that?â
Letâs break it down for you in simple terms so you avoid takedowns, policy issues, and future regrets.
â When Can You Re-upload Your Song to Another Platform?
You can re-upload your song with a different distributor only under these conditions:
1. Your previous distributor has taken down the release.
Make sure the old version is officially removed from all stores. If it's still live, re-uploading the same song again will create a duplicate, which can get both versions removed or flagged.
2. You waited for your contract period to end.
For example, at One Music Records, your release remains active for 1 full year. If you want to remove it before that, you must request a takedown first. Only after it's removed can you switch.
â When You Should NOT Re-upload the Same Song
If your song is still live from another distributor. This causes duplication, confuses the system, and can affect your artist profile, playlist placements, and analytics.
If you havenât informed your current distributor. Some platforms have clear takedown protocols. Skipping them can lead to account strikes or even blacklisting.
If your song has active Content ID or monetization.Changing platforms without removing existing monetization can create disputes or block monetization altogether.
đ What If Youâre Distributing with One Music Records?
At One Music Records:
If your song is already approved and live, you cannot release it elsewhere without informing us.
You can request a takedown anytime, but your plan covers the song for 1 year. Re-uploading during this period is not allowed unless the takedown is complete.
If you want to re-release the same song, it must be:
With a new plan
A new version (remastered, remix, etc.)
Or after the original has been taken down
â ïž What Can Happen If You Violate This Rule?
Your song might get removed from all platforms
You may face delays in revenue
Your artist profile may get split or corrupted
You can be permanently blocked by some platforms
â Final Tips for Artists
Always finish your existing contract before switching.
If you want to move platforms, request takedown first.
Keep your metadata, ISRC, and UPCs clear to avoid confusion.
When in doubt, ask your current distributor (like us!).
